After six weeks of testimony, closing arguments began Sunday for the Casey Anthony trial.
But before either attorney spoke -- an announcement -- from presiding Judge Belvin Perry.
Warning the defense could not use sexual abuse in its argument.
“The court hereby finds that there is no facts and evidence, or reasonable inference that can be drawn there from that there’s evidence that I’ve amissed that either Mr. George Anthony or Mr. Lee Anthony molested or attempted to molest Miss Anthony.” (Video: CNN)
That was considered a blow to the defense, which built it's argument that Caylee’s death was an accidental drowning.
They alleged a panicked Casey, once abused by her family, had no emotional capacity to cope and thus hid her daughter’s body. The prosecution argues Casey killed Caylee, hid her body in the trunk of her car, then dumped her in a nearby swamp. They allege she wanted to lead a care-free party life. (Video: Fox News)
Sunday’s arguments were long and tense -- broadcast live by Orlando’s WESH TV:.
ASHTON: “These are the facts prove, beyond a reasonable doubt that Casey Anthony is guilty of murder in the first degree. And that that murder is premeditated.”
BAEZ: “We’re going to ask you to render a verdict of not guilty on these charges because they simply are not proven, and they’re simply not true.”
And, in the middle of the defense’s closing argument -- Judge Perry stopped the proceedings to reprimand the attorneys.
You can see here, Prosecutor Ashton appears to be laughing while the defense closes. Then, Baez reacts:
BAEZ: “The truth is the truth -- and depending on who’s asking the questions -- whether it’s this laughing guy right here---”
ASHTON: “Objection!”
BAEZ: “---Or whether its myself!”
JUDGE PERRY: “Sustained!”

An analyst on MSNBC says -- those fireworks could be a game-changer.
“This is the last thing that you want, in the middle of your closing, you’re almost done -- this is a death penatly case, now we have to stop -- roll the video tape -- to determine whether you're going to get in trouble? Thats, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that happen before.”
Casey Anthony has pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder. She could face a possible death sentence or life in prison if convicted of that charge. NBC’s Kerry Sanders says its difficult to read how the jury will vote:
KERRY SANDERS: “Its hard to say which way the jury is leaning, I’ve watched them throughout this trial and they all have poker faces, nobody really revealing anything... There’s not wide eyes, or [gasp!], moments where you see somebody’s mouth like this throughout this trial.”
Following closing arguments, the jury will deliberate. If they find Casey guilty of first-degree murder, then the trial will enter a second phase to determine if she will face the death penalty or life in prison.
