President Obama wants to put a Band-Aid on health care, calling the issue “urgent” in his opening statements at the much-anticipated bipartisan summit.
Coverage of the summit is everywhere, from live blogging to broadcasting — but is it even worth watching? Many news outlets have been calling the summit pointless since its start.
CBS says it's a big risk for the president.
SMITH: "President Obama is going to meet with Republicans for an extraordinary summit — it’s a high stakes gamble that could be all or nothing for the president."
REID: "Even before the summit begins both sides are already digging in their heels, so we’re expecting more conflict than compromise.”
On ABC's Good Morning America, Bill O’Reilly says the discussion won’t cure any of health care reform's ailments.
STEPHANOPOLOUS: "You don’t think there’s a deal to be had here then?"
O'REILLY: "No, I’ll tell you why there’s no deal — because the idealogs on both sides smell blood. Obama’s got to watch his left wing flank. ... Then on the other side the real hardcore right says, ‘We got him on the ropes! He’s going to go down! President Obama – he’s going to go! Why help him? November is just around the corner.’”
Still, on FOX News, Greta Van Susteren says maybe the summit will finally open some doors.
“I talk to Democrats, Republicans — they all seem perfectly nice and interested. Yet, I don’t get the sense anyone’s really talking to anybody. So, at least now we’re sort of putting your feet to the fire and saying, ‘talk to each other.’”
