After breaking box office records for its opening weekend, Harry Potter has reached another milestone.

ANCHOR, KTVI: “Well, Harry Potter casting a spell on movie-goers.”

RALPH FIENNES (LORD VOLDEMORT): “You have fought valiantly.”

ANCHOR: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has now made more than $1 billion worldwide. The final Harry Potter movie is the first of the eight films to reach that level.”

The reigning champ is James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ -- which cleaned up shop with $2.8 billion global box office. That’s followed by Cameron’s other epic -- you might have heard of it -- ‘Titanic.’

A writer for the Guardian says -- although the 1 billion mark is big news -- most saw it coming.

“The first movie in the series, [Philosopher's] Stone, came closest on $974.8m in early 2002. The rest of the Potters were no slouches ... but, for almost a decade since, studio executives had been watching expectantly as each successive movie failed to reach the mark.”

The Telegraph notes one caveat, saying -- the achievement looks a little less epic when you take inflation into account.

“But taking into account today's higher admission prices, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has not yet caught up to Philosopher's Stone in terms of actual tickets sold.”

And a blogger for the Orlando Sentinel adds -- despite the milestone, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hasn’t really been wowing at the box office since its opening weekend.

“The film’s box office opening was record-breaking, fell off dramatically in its second week and has tapered off more gradually in succeeding weeks... Realistically, it could easily climb into the all-time top five. Catching ‘Avatar’? No way.”
