Warner Bros. might have some unhappy Muggles on it’s hands December 29th--the day the movie giant plans to stop shipping Harry Potter DVDs to retailers. ClevverMovie’s Tatiana Carrier has the scoop.

“Warners said it will stop shipping all titles, including box sets and special and limited editions. That includes the final title in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which hits stores Nov. 11, as well as Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Collection.”

Fans will have 48 days to pick up the latest installment of the series before shipments stop completely. MTV blogger Terri Schwartz says its easy to see why Warner Bros. decided to throw the series into Gringotts.

“When Warner Bros announced this earlier this month, I was more peeved than anything else...I think it's hard to see this move as anything other than an attempt to get the "Potter" DVDs selling faster and in higher quantities.”

The Harry Potter franchise has more going for it than the movies--Guardian writer James Russell points out Warner Bros. might be doing a limited release of DVDs to keep the brand alive.

“...it's a risky scheme, but Warner Bros decision to try it out tells us how Potter will be maintained as a kind of prestige, heritage brand in the future. After all, Warner Bros has a great deal of Potter related material still to sell – a theme park in Orlando, a studio tour about to open in the UK, as well related ventures such as the Pottermore website and an ongoing series of videogames.”

Torrent Freak reports Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was the third most pirated movie last week, and The Next Web writer Anna Heim says it doesn’t matter if films go into the vault--you can always find them on the Web.

“What customers want can be summarized very simply: “any film, anywhere, anytime.” If studios can’t deliver this, they’ll look for it elsewhere – a lesson Hollywood should have learned years ago...studios may want to think again about lowering DVD and Blu-Ray prices; after all, they’re competing against free.”

And Atlanta Journal-Constitution blogger Theresa Walsh Giarrusso says she gets why Warner Bros. is putting movies in the vault--but it’s just plain annoying.

“...as a parent that aggravates the sin out of me! We rarely buy movies...when you have three kids and you know they are each going to have a Harry Potter phase you want to be able trot the movies out when they have read the book and are ready.”

But don’t despair, Potter fans--Warner Bros’ senior Vice President Jeff Baker told Entertainment Weekly, the Potter DVDs won’t be gone forever.

“ ‘There is discussion internally about aggregating assets from all of these films over the last decade and adding some new things — we’ve never done an Ultimate Edition on the final two films — and doing some grand kind of piece...It could be the end of 2012 or the beginning of ’13.’ ”
