Hamas executes two Palestinians in Gaza for allegedly collaborating with Israel.
The father and son, ages 58 and 29, were accused of providing information to assassinate Palestinians. Hamas’ Interior Ministry spokesman explains to CNN --
"The issue of collaborators is highly dangerous in the Palestinian society...We must act forcefully because there is a war underneath the surface between us and the Israeli intelligence and we must win it."
But some say the executions were illegal -- because they occurred without approval from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. BBC has more --
“Under Palestinian law, collaboration with Israel, murder, and drug trafficking are all punishable by death... All executions must be approved by the Palestinian president... The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) condemned the executions, saying there was no legal justification for the failure to seek Mr Abbas's ratification of the sentences.”
But Hamas’ Interior Ministry argues -- it no longer recognizes the legitimacy of the Palestinian leader, so no authorization was needed.
"According to the Ma'an report, the Hamas Interior Ministry said execution orders were issued in 2004 and were postponed several times until the crimes of the accused could be thoroughly proven." (The Jerusalem Post)
Since seizing control of the coastal area in 2007, BBC reports the PCHR says Hamas authorities have executed five people for spying and assisting the enemy.
