Remember that hacker who got Siri almost-working on the iPhone 4? He’s done a little more work, and now the voice-recognition assistant will talk back to any device that runs iOS 5.
Steven Troughton-Smith gave 9to5Mac a video demonstration of Siri listening to input and providing accurate responses. The software is running on a new, white iPhone 4S and on a jailbroken iPhone 4.
Previously, Siri on the iPhone 4 couldn’t contact Apple’s servers. Troughton-Smith had to get code and files from a jailbroken iPhone 4S to make it work.
“Find the nearest Starbucks.”
“I found a number of places matching Starbucks fairly close to you.” (9to5Mac)
So you want Siri on your iPhone 4? You’ll need to jailbreak an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 4S. And PCWorld says it will take even more than that.
“...porting Siri to the iPhone 4 and other iOS devices won't be for the faint of heart. Troughton-Smith said he plans to release source code to the tools he made, but won't create a compiled program to help you do the port.”
That’s mostly to prevent Apple from suing. CNET explains.
“In other words, there are some things going on behind the scenes that Apple won't like, and could very well move to block if a working hack takes off...”
And Tom’s Guide suggests that’s plausible. This is Apple’s intellectual property, after all.
“Those hoping to see this up on Cydia, the app store for jailbroken devices, won't be seeing it from Troughton-Smith. The requirement for specific software from the iPhone 4S puts a Siri port into the territory of software piracy.”
But, as PCWorld notes, Troughton-Smith solved the tech challenge to solve it. And he plans to test his trick on the 3GS in November.
