After the Duggars announced they’re having their 20th baby, a gynecologist is asking; Is it safe? Dr. Lois Brustman is a professor of gynecology at Columbia University. Here’s what she told Fox News.
“Doctors worry most that these women will hemorrhage after delivery, and doctors won't be able to get the uterus to contract to stop the bleeding.”
In her most recent pregnancy Duggar suffered preclampsia -- a form of prenatal hypertension while giving birth. That caused her latest baby to weigh just one pound six ounces. So are Michelle and husband Jim Bob worried about their 20th? NBC caught up with the two after their announcement.
“Our physician has said the risk might be a little bit higher just due to the fact that Josie was born quite a bit earlier, but yet he said my health is great. All of the factors that would be there be behind the scenes, he did a test and said, ‘Really, I am strong and healthy.’”
So the Duggars are optimistic. But let’s get an expert’s opinion. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences did a study on couples from the 1800’s. That’s when larger families were more common. The Los Angeles Times posted some of its findings.
“Having a larger amount of children was linked with a greater risk of early death for both mothers and fathers.”
Regardless of advancements in medicine---the author of the study says those types of patterns are still prevalent today. As for others---they think the mother’s nuts---but in a good way. Here’s WXII.
“But they have kids ranging from 23 to 23 months. And their motto is there’s always room for one more. My motto is just say no!”
Can 20 kids pose a serious health risk -- or just another college tuition bill? Comment on the story and weigh in for yourself. For Newsy, I’m Jonathan Ketz---multiple sources---the real story.
