Thought it’s been more than 400 years since he became the face of the protest movement-- the man who inspired the movie ‘V for Vendetta’ is making headlines again.
CNN’s Nadia Bilchik tells us why we should ‘remember, remember the 5th of November.’
“Guy Fawkes was somebody who in 1605 tried to blow up the British Parliament under King James I. And he was protesting the fact that King James I was he felt was not very good to Roman Catholics. And what he was going to do was put a whole lot of gunpowder under the Parliament and he was going to be the one to light it. ”
Fawkes was later caught and put to death-- but that hasn’t stopped people in England from celebrating the anniversary of his treasonous plot by donning masks and burning his effigy.
A blogger for the LA Times says, the 5th of November has a renewed sense of importance this time around.
“[T]he stylized Fawkes mask has been used by protesters, including the Occupiers, WikiLeaks supporters and the hackers known as Anonymous. The mask's use has become an apolitical message that simply says it's cool to be opposed to authority and even cooler to take action against perceived repression, whether economic, political or social.”
A Facebook group has been created encouraging the members of the Occupy movement to come together on November 5th to, quote, “rally efforts to end corruption and social injustice.” ABC’s Christina Caron points out--- there is one big difference between Fawkes and the Occupiers.
“Although ‘V’ sought and advocated for vengeance, Occupy has a much more peaceful message, emphasizing that Saturday’s rally is “not a channel to express violence.”
It may not be violent, but the hacker group Anonymous has promised a different sort of attack on November 5th. ITWire’s David Heath jokingly suggests we should all prepare for the worst.
“Anonymous announced an attack on the modern "people's house," Facebook. Most observers seem to have laughed at the threat and moved on to the next potential tragedy, but what if it was real? What if life as we know it (aka Facebook) ends, or is at least seriously impacted just as Anonymous has threatened.”
Though the Occupy and Anonymous movements intend to protest Wall Street-- a blogger for The Motley Fool says embracing Guy Fawkes may have an unintended consequence for capitalism.
“Strangely, two companies might earn little windfalls from all this masked bombast. Time Warner owns the rights to the likeness and receives royalties with every sale. The mask is a [also] a top seller on Amazon. While I'm not aware of Anonymous ever having called for the wholesale destruction of capitalism, its anarchic stylings make this not without its small ironies."
