Apparently Gumby was just not cut out for a life of crime. On Monday, a man dressed as the classic, green cartoon attempted to rob a 7/11 in San Diego.

Security footage captured Gumby and his accomplice, who many speculate to be Pokey. Gawker summed up Gumby’s first stab at an attempted robbery saying-

‘How badly did Gumby screw up his attempted robbery of a San Diego 7-11? Well, really badly: Not only did he not, in fact, steal anything, he actually gave money to the clerk’

KSWB spoke to San Diego Police Detective Gary Hassen -- and he explains how the robber got short-changed.

“Gumby walked up to the front counter and told the clerk ‘This is a robbery’. The clerk looked at him and said ‘You know what I don’t have time for this, I gotta clean up.’ The clerk thought it was a prank, but apparently Gumby wasn’t laughing. He told him, ‘if you don’t believe this is a robbery i’ll get my gun’. He took his Gumby paw and put it in his Gumby pocket and he could not retrieve his weapon or alledge weapon that he though he could. The only thing that fell out of Gumby’s pocket was 26 cents of change which fell on the floor.”

Even though the crazy, clay criminal is still on the loose, many are not too worried. TMZ says-

‘The video is hilarious.. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Gumby’s arrest. Chances are he is unarmed and completely harmless.’

But all jokes aside, San Diego police Detective Gary Hassan tells KSWB the situation was no laughing matter:

"Whether it's (a person in) a Gumby costume, ski mask or whatever, he said he had a gun, and I have to believe he had a gun.''

Gumby’s failed stick-up isn’t the first case of costumed criminality. The website ClumsyCrooks.com names a couple of other peculiar crimes:

In Michigan – A man in a batman costume was arrested after he was found dangling from a rope on the roof. He was charged with trespassing and weapons possession.

In New York – A teenager’s bike was stolen by two people in a gorilla costume and one in a chicken outfit.

And in Washington – A man wearing a banana costume was arrested after flashing himself to restaurant patrons and waving a gun in the air.
