They call Greg Norman “The Shark.” As of late the Australian Golfer has been having a feeding frenzy in the media discussing Tiger Woods.
Just weeks after saying he doesn’t think Woods will ever win another major, Norman made headlines again when he said Woods didn’t deserve his selection to the U.S. President’s Cup team. The News-Press in Fort Myers has the word from the Shark:
“[Tiger’s] a different player out there nowadays. He even looks tied up. He looks more confined. I know what it takes to have freedom in a golf swing … and I just don’t think he’s technically in the right position to do what he used to do.”
A US Golf TV blogger sides with Norman, and says his comments are refreshing:
“It’s a profound relief when PGA Tour players say things other than clichés… and aren’t afraid to criticize when appropriate… The President’s Cup is not a lifetime achievement award, it’s a competition between deserved top players.”
Bloomberg’s Damon Hack doesn’t think Woods is one of those top players, and says this tiger has been de-clawed:
“You look at the scandal, you look at his body breaking down at age 35… he’s no longer the best driver of the golf ball, the best putter of the golf ball, the best short game player. He basically is a bloody Tiger Woods. He’s not the same intimidator that he was a decade ago.”
He may not be an intimidator, but The Golf Blog says Woods’ presence at the tournament will draw plenty of interest:
“The President’s Cup is a made-for-television event… Having Tiger Woods on the team adds incredible TV viewer interest that no other golfer can add. Even if Tiger plays poorly, that will be a much bigger news story or attraction for the mainstream media than not having Tiger there.”
And finally – ESPN.com’s Michael Collins cautions Norman against giving Woods any bulletin board material:
“Not for nothing Greg – I think the last time somebody called out Tiger Woods, he got a little Tiger tattoo on his behind. Why don’t you call Steven Ames the next time you think about calling somebody out?”
