Looking to buy a pair of Marty McFly’s futuristic kicks from Back to the Future II? Well, settle down sneaker geeks -- thanks to Nike you won’t need a Delorean or a flux capacitor to do so.
Take a look at the shoes first, suspenseful, promo ad titled “McFly’s Closet”.
The iconic shoes, made famous in this scene from the 1989 movie, are being produced by Nike to be sold on eBay with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. And CBS says if you want a pair of the limited edition shoes you should act fast -- and break out the credit card.
“Fifteen hundred pairs of these shoes are going to be put on eBay for the next ten days … You can expect that shoe collectors are willing to pay a pretty hefty mint for these items, so unless you are willing to shell out the dough … you'll probably have to go shoeless.”
But if you do spend an obscene amount of money on these historic high tops, which have already surpassed the $10,000 mark in at least one auction, you can rest easy. The money is not only going to a good cause it’s also being matched -- dollar for dollar. Michael J. Fox told David Letterman...
“Whatever you pay for them, that’s going to be doubled because Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Sergey’s the co-founder of Google, are going to match up to fifty million dollars until 2012.”
So is this blast from the past the real deal? According to Wired -- it’s close, but it’s missing one key component.
“The shoes have a electroluminescent ‘Nike’ panel on the strap, and LEDs glow from the sole and heel. What it doesn’t have is self-lacing laces. Maybe we’ll have to wait for 2015 for these, or maybe they’re just too damn hard to make.”
And Sabotage Times adds -- if it wasn’t backed by a good cause, the lack of power-laces might have been a deal breaker.
“I was a bit cross at first, I’ll be honest. I had written a few hundred words about a waiting world’s enthusiasm for this pair of shoes and had been genuinely looking forward to seeing them in action. However, on balance, it’s for a brilliant cause."
So what do we want to see next from Back to the Future II? Well, hovering skateboards, of course. Get on it, science.
