Android says, check the scoreboard. According to Google VP Andy Rubin, 700,000 ‘droid-powered devices are activated everyday.

Rubin made the annoucement on Twitter and Google+. He later responded to questions on -- what else -- Google+. He says...

“...and for those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don't count re-sold devices), and ‘activations’ means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.”

This new 700,000 figure is up from the 550,000 daily activations the G-Team announced last month. And it almost double the amount reported in May of this year. ZDNet puts the new number into perspective.

“It works out at almost 5 million devices per week, or a staggering 21 million a month. … If Google can keep up these sort of activation numbers, there will be over 60 million Android devices activated per quarter.”

And a reporter for Cult of Mac says these figures have certainly taken a bite out of Apple.

“In contrast to the past, when [Apple] would laud iOS activation numbers, the company hasn’t updated the figures since the end of the three-month September quarter, when CEO Tim Cook announced sales of more than 250 million iOS devices.”

This activation increase follows comScore’s report, which as of October 2011, put the green droid on top with around 46% of smartphone market share. Apple, on the other hand, trailed with about 28%.

So has Android taken out iOS? Between the fanboys camping out for the next Apple device and Google reporting it’s activated over 200 million Android devices worldwide, the war is probably far from over. Stay tuned.
