Hold onto your hats, gamers. Google’s Niantic Lab is launching a new location-based mobile game called Ingress. And this game takes place in the real world. Here’s a preview.

I know that many tools will be needed to fight this battle. You just have to know where to look and know what you’re seeing. Portals emit exotic matter into our world and that matter has certain effects on our world.”

Users will be able to generate virtual energy by walking around cities and collecting units of “XM.” Energy is spent going on missions around cities in public places like museums and libraries. AllThingsD spoke with the director of Google’s Niantic Labs about the game.

“The concept is something like World of Warcraft, where everyone in world is playing the same game,” … Anyone can play from anywhere in the world, though in more densely played areas there will be more local competition for resources. Outdoor physical activity is a big component of this, though driving between locations isn’t banned.”

A writer for TechCrunch reports: There are two teams-- the Enlightened -- and the Resistance. The Enlightened embrace the powerful energy tracked on the app and the Resistance fight the powerful energy that emerges from sculptures and structures around the city.”

Web Pro News notes, companies will participate in the game as well.

“Physical stores like Jamba Juice, Chrome and Zipcar among others will be incorporated into the alternate reality game so advertising is incorporated and in the near future, Google may help developers create other games like this one.”

For now, the game is only available to Android users and the app is available in the Google Play store. To participate, you have to request an invite on the website.
