Google’s next mobile operating system could be released as early as next month, just in time to compete with the iPhone 5. Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt broke the news earlier this week.

“We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich, for some reason, which is being released in October-November, which everybody’s very excited about...”

Team Google is calling the new OS the “most ambitious yet,” and a blogger for the International Business Times agrees.

“If Apple thought that things looked bad enough, it was wrong. ...unlike previous versions, the latest version of Android is being billed as the most pivotal update yet in the mobile OS battle...”

And Jonathan Geller at Boy Genius Report adds--  expediting this release is critical because..

“… the company doesn’t want potential customers coming out of contracts … and ‘drooling over the iPhone 5.’”

Despite its potentially rushed release, J. Glenn Künzler at MacTrast is excited to see the next OS that’ll give Apple a run for its money.

“So, will Ice Cream Sandwich sweep the masses off their feet? Personally, I very much doubt it. But in all honesty, I sincerely hope that it is a fantastic release that truly does challenge Apple and iOS...”

Analysts predict Ice Cream Sandwich will launch on new flagship phones from Samsung and HTC, and arrive later on current phones via an update.
