Mikah SargentGmail users weren't the only ones affected by a Google glitch as of late. A Hotmail user opened his email on Thursday and discovered thousands of blank emails waiting in his inbox.
All thanks to Google search. A glitch in the code caused Californian David S. Peck's Hotmail account to appear as one of the top links in Google search.
A writer for The Daily Dot describes the glitch: When users searched Google for the word "gmail," the second result — which is supposed to lead users directly to their email account — actually gave users the option to send an email to David Peck.
Clicking on it would open up a compose window with Peck's email address in the "To" field.
Peck told TechCrunch it's getting difficult to sift through the mess. "I deleted everything last night and woke up this morning and had 1,900 new emails. Only two of them were emails I cared about."
And Search Engine Land reports this glitch isn't a new one. The site first reported the error on Monday, but at that time it led to a different email address.
Luckily for Peck, it looks like the issue has finally been fixed. Search Engine Land has a statement from a Google spokesperson:
"Due to a technical glitch, some email addresses on public webpages appeared too prominently in search results. We've fixed the issue and are sorry for any inconvenience caused." (Via Search Engine Land)
No word on how the company plans to fix that whole miniscule issue of his email address being exposed to thousands of people.
