Google might have a reason for some holiday cheer this year -- or 3.7 million reasons.
According to this tweet from Google senior VP of mobile Andy Rubin, that’s how many new Android devices were activated on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in 2011.
And compared to the 700,000 Android activations per day he posted last week that’s a serious jump.
Although it’s unclear exactly where Rubin got his numbers he might be referring to a Flurry Analytics study posted Tuesday. Counting activations of both Android and Apple iOS devices the study shows...
“On Christmas Day, activations jumped to more than 6.8 million, a 353% increase over the baseline.”
and adds...
“Compared to Christmas Day 2010, the previous single-day record, with 2.8 million device activations, Christmas 2011 grew by more than 140%.”
That’s a lot of tech under the tree. So how many of those activations actually belong to Apple? Unfortunately, the study doesn’t say, but TechCrunch gives us an educated guess...
“If I were a betting man, I’d wager that slightly less iPhones were activated on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but more iOS devices in total when you account for iPods and iPads.”
Finally, that’s not all the good news for Apple and Android this week. The New York Times reports both companies had an “App-y” Christmas...
“...people downloaded 242 million apps on Christmas, and 150 million apps on Christmas Eve. Over all, the app market showed growth of 125 percent for the first 20 days of December, compared with the same period last year.”
