A neighbor turned into a hero in New Mexico--stopping a kidnapper-- just before it was too late. CNN has the latest.
“A would-be kidnapper foiled, chased down by a neighbor who saw him force a 6-year-old girl into his van. Albuquerque police say the suspect was being chased by the good samaritan when he crashed and then ran off. That’s when the neighbor rescued the girl.”
The Albuquerque Journal reports the girl was on her way back from a neighbor’s house when a...
“...van stopped and the driver approached her and grabbed her with one hand covering her mouth, the other snatching her up by the body... The girl said she bit the man’s hand as he placed it over her mouth.”
So just who is this heroic neighbor? His name is Antonio Diaz Chacon. And Hispanically Speaking News writes Chacon couldn’t have acted at a better time.
“Frighteningly, authorities are reporting that [the kidnaper] had borrowed the van from his sister and then proceeded to remove the back seats.”
The girl’s family tells KOAT in an off-camera interview, they’re elated their neighbor was keeping his eyes and ears open.
REPORTER:“He didn’t want to show his face, but Marcos Vega wants everyone to know there are still pretty good people out there.”
TRANSLATOR: “He said that he feels pretty lucky and thanks god a lot and that man, he’s just really happy that he got my sister back.”
Chacon is brushing off his hero status -- saying his reaction just came naturally.
REPORTER: “Chacon says he doesn’t see himself as a hero, he says he has kids of his home, and it all happened so fast, he just reacted.”
TRANSLATOR: “He says it’s instinct to save someone’s life, to do something good, for it not to become a tragedy.”
According to CNN, the suspect has been charged with kidnapping, child abuse and tampering with evidence.
