“So Kymer, absolutely unphased, putting for par and the win and he is true. He is guaranteed the world’s number one ranking.” (Video from ESPN)
Just like that -- Martin Kymer is the world’s new number one golfer. It’s been two years in the making for this German competitor, but the focus is not on how he got to the top, but who he knocked off.
Kaymer beat out Bubba Watson at the recent Accenture Match Play qualifiers, taking the world title from Lee Westwood after he reigned for a short 11-week span. And before Westwood was the youngest legendary golfer of the last decade -- Tiger Woods. What happened to him anyway? (Video from ESPN)
“He was the most talented player in the world prior to that point and I think he remains that today. He is the best player in the world that’s just simply not playing his best... He will sort out his golf swing, he will come out with something functional that he can trust, and he will get there -- but it’s not a given anymore.” (Video from The Golf Channel)
But while many sports analysts say blame a sloppy swing for Tiger’s woes -- a writer for The Charlotte Observer says -- the former number one is struggling with something else.
“It's the expectation level. There's a sense of doubt where there used to be none. Woods' confidence was always his ultimate weapon, but it's been dented. It has to be.”
Where can this confidence come from? The Bleacher Report puts the focus on his schedule..
“At a win percentage of 25, the more Tiger plays, the more his chances of winning once will happen... He has to consciously choose to grind it out and play more golf. If he doesn't, yet again he can credit all of his losses to poor decision making (which we know Tiger is capable of).”
But, one blogger for On The Tee says- there’s still time for Tiger.
“The PGA Tour is not stationary. It never has been. Time ages all... Woods has't reached 40 yet. It's still too early to say he is all done.”
So, will today’s top golfers always play in Tiger’s shadow? Or is Kaymer’s rise to number one the final nail in Woods’ career coffin?
