The lip tickler. The soup strainer. The face furniture. Whatever you want to call it, ESPN’s Jim Rome has the scoop on a hockey player sporting the ‘stache for a cause.
“Check out what Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller has made up. A ‘stache mask with all of his teammates all over his melon and all ‘stached up and styling. As a long time admirer of hockey and mustaches I have got to say I cannot give the man enough props for that.”
Hiller will be dawning the historic head-gear in commemoration of ‘Movember’-- where men grow mustaches for the month to bring awareness to men’s health issues-- like prostate cancer.
A blogger for Yahoo! Sports thinks there would be at least one mustachioed icon who would be proud.
“Given that NHL players are familiar with going unshaven for a specific time period, they're naturals for 'Movember' participation. If Burt Reynolds ever wore a hockey mask, it would be this hockey mask.”
And the best part -- James Carty from Sportsology says it’s the man behind the mask.
“The real gem here is Hiller's own portrait, which features him on the backplate in his goalie stance with his mask up and the kind of goofy smile only a Swiss man could master.”
Last year more than 150 hockey players grew mustaches in support of the campaign. A writer for the Goalie Guild thinks we will see more “fuzzy dusters” on the ice this ‘Movember.’
“What makes [it] so entertaining is the pure, wholesome fun that guys have growing crazy moustaches for an entire month. Our girlfriends and wives might despise them, but hockey players and fans everywhere have quickly embraced the opportunity to support this important campaign.”
Hiller is planning to auction the mask off at the end of the month. All of the proceeds will go to charity.
