Looks like the writers of James Bond could have a new story idea: Police in Brussels are looking for eight men suspected of stealing diamonds from an international airport Monday night. Something WABC explains took just minutes.
“Police say the thieves drove straight onto the tarmac, got through to the precious cargo as it was being loaded on the plane. They drove off the tarmac in a Mercedes and Audi.”
So how much did the group get away with? About 22 pounds estimated at more than $50 million worth.
The Mirror explains the costly cargo was on its way to Zurich until the men interfered—also causing the flight’s cancellation.
The Daily Mail explains air transport is considered to be the safest way to transport small, high-value items according to a logistics expert.
“Unlike a car or a truck, a plane cannot be attacked by robbers once it is on its way, and it is considered to be very safe before departure and after arrival because the aircraft is always within the confines of an airport - which are normally highly secured.”
Authorities found a fake burnt out police car reportedly used in the heist shortly after and say the masked men were armed, but no shots were fired. An investigation is still underway.
