Berlin is bringing it back-- the wall that is.
It's been 50 years since construction began on the Berlin Wall. RT reports on the ceremony that marked the occasion.

“Germany's marking the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall. Ceremonies in the capital started with a memorial service and a minute's silence to honour those who died trying to flee from communist controlled East Germany to the West. The Wall spread for nearly 160 kilometers dividing the city for over 28 years.”

Seems like they’re still divided. Architects have been constructing a memorial of the broken down block since 2007, but a former advisor to the German chancellor tells Al Jazeera-- for some, the wall is better as a distant memory.

ANCHOR: “What does today mean for you?”
STRUEMER: “Well first of all a memory of a very black Sunday. It was a sunny day but suddenly a shadow of war was cast over it and the whole of Europe.”

But some locals are actually in favor of holding on to the memory. Canada.com reports a recent poll showing:

“...a full 21% of the 16.7 million easterners felt nostalgic about the concrete, barbed wire and armed guards that separated them from the west.”

VOA News says Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit considers the wall a constant reminder for Germany to maintain freedom and democracy. But Euronews says-- the younger generations might not have any wall left to remind them.

“Aside from Check-Point Charlie, only a series of concrete slabs and stones around Germany’s Capitol lay testament to the barrier which developed into a deadly border system... ‘I would love to see a wall here so I can fully imagine it’, says this boy… ‘If you come here, you get the feeling it doesn’t exist anymore. It’s like the wall itself wants to be extinct.’”
