After news of Disney buying Lucasfilm, many were left wondering what would George Lucas do with the $4 billion he’d get from the deal. Well, it turns out Lucas has a soft spot for education.

The Hollywood Reporter points out Lucas’ commitment to The Giving Pledge in 2010, where he stated:

“I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education.  It is the key to the survival of the human race.  We have to plan for our collective future—and the first step begins with social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children.”

While Lucas has made several philanthropic ventures before, a Youtube video from TheDisneyPost provides a better explanation from Lucas himself:

“I realized at some point I needed to retire, and I wanted to go on and do other things - things in philanthropy.”

Later in the video, Lucas said the deal:

“will give me a chance to go off and explore my own interests, and at the same time feel completely confident that Disney will take good care of the franchise.”

Still, there are a lot of lingering questions. An IGN writer says:

“It’s not yet clear where he will direct the money, be it to a new foundation, the George Lucas Educational Foundation, or one of the many charities and causes he has previously supported.”

And a writer for The Outhousers asks:

“Is Lucas dying? Is he just so rich that it doesn't matter? Is he thinking about his legacy? Or does he just really, honestly care about people and want to help the country and the human race? Nah. Remember Jar Jar Binks. Never Forget!”
