Gates, Zuckerberg Put Their Cash Toward Clean Energy

The COP21 climate conference in Paris is underway, and some big names are promoting a global initiative that's pushing for a zero-emissions future.

Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and other big-name entrepreneurs are teaming up to provide the world clean and renewable energy.

Their initiative, dubbed the "Breakthrough Energy Coalition," aims to join governments, investors and inventors. (Video via the Breakthrough Energy Coaltion)

"The government's been there to fund the basic research. That was true for the digital revolution. ... We need the basic research, but we have to pair that with people who are willing to fund high-risk breakthrough energy companies," Gates said. (Video via the Breakthrough Energy Coaltion)

The goal is a zero-emissions energy future, and the group plans on investing broadly across sectors like electrical generation, transportation and agriculture.

Zuckerberg and Gates' announcement comes as the COP21 climate change conference starts in Paris.
