The Gamecocks go back-to-back in Omaha.
South Carolina won its second straight NCAA baseball championship.
Only the 6th team ever to repeat, SC broke plenty of records on the road to the College World Series.
“South Carolina became the first team to ever go 10-0 in an NCAA tournament and the first since Oregon State in 2007 to go unbeaten in a CWS. The Gamecocks' streaks of 16 NCAA tournament wins and 11 straight in the CWS are both the longest all-time."
To repeat in any sport, at any level, is incredibly difficult.
Adding to that -- a new NCAA bat rule went into effect this year - taking some of the bounce off the barrell. ESPN credits the squad’s ability to adapt.
“Certainly when they have a rule change, like they did this year with the bats, coaches and players have to make an adjustment. If you’re the team that won the championship, you’re the team that made the best adjustment.”
“Pitching and defense, and the details about the game and South Carolina was definitely the best on all the details.”
This team brought something to Columbia, SC, that they have never had before. And the celebration is sure to make up for lost time.
"The baseball team's amazing run through two College World Series has been a bright spot in a mostly dreary century of athletics for the Gamecocks. Last year's national championship was the first in a men's sport and just second in any sport for the school's athletic teams."
Looking forward, the Gamecocks lose several key players next year. But you can bet some of them are already thinking of one word: threepeat.
