Former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi was buried early Tuesday morning. Euronews reports,

“The remains of Libya's former dictator Muammar Gaddafi have been buried in a secret location deep in the Sahara desert, according to the country's new administration.”

Gaddafi was buried with his son Mutassim and his former defense minister. According to Channel 4 News, the body was on display in a meat storage facility after his death on Thursday, but officials had to make decisions quickly after the body started to decompose...

“The National Transitional Council (NTC) was undecided about how to deal with the body and the aftermath of Gaddafi's death. But the rotting corpse was closed to the public on Monday night, its state of decay forcing the NTC to make a swift decision.”

A reporter for NPR says secrecy was a main concern when it came to Gaddafi’s burial. With the leader being such a polarizing figure, a public grave site could become a place of further unrest.

“There was a lot of debate here as to what should happen to Gaddafi’s remains, the leadership though always maintained the burial site should remain secret because they didn’t want it to turn into a shrine or conversely be defaced by those who hated him.”

The burial was indeed shrouded in secrecy. According to the Australian channel ABC...

“Such is the sensitivity of what happens to Gaddafi's remains that the burial was witnessed by only four people, who've sworn never to reveal the grave's whereabouts.”

Besides the witnesses, Gaddafi’s family was also present.  Sky News reports Muslim burial traditions were observed...

“The bodies were washed, they were prayed on according to Islamic convention, and there were members of Gaddafi’s family present along with Muslim clerics...”

According to news agency AFP, a member of the National Transitional Council tells reporters, Gaddafi didn’t deserve a proper Muslim burial, but it was the NTC’s decision to grant him one.
