BY EMOKE BEBIAK

2011 has been filled with royal weddings and celebrity baby bumps. Now, the stork has visited the French presidential couple. Euronews reports...

“It is a girl! French first lady Carla Bruni has given birth to President Nicolas Sarkozy's baby.”

The baby girl was born in a Parisian hospital late Wednesday evening. No one knows the baby’s name yet, but 7NEWS reports on the speculations...

“There’s no official word on a name yet, however, there are rumors she could be named Dalia.”

So how did Sarkozy react to the news? The Telegraph says the proud father says it is a “profound joy” even though he wasn’t present for the birth due to presidential duties...

“Mr Sarkozy visited his wife for half an hour yesterday afternoon but missed the birth. Instead, he flew to Frankfurt for an informal meeting with German chancellor Angela Merkel on how to save the eurozone, ahead of a self-imposed Sunday deadline for a plan.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, analysts speculate whether the baby’s arrival will advance Sarkozy’s political career, especially now that the 2012 presidential elections are in sight. The paper writes...

“In other European countries, notably the U.K., the arrival of a newborn heralded electoral success, but it seems likely that Mr. Sarkozy will keep relatively mum about his latest child.”

A former opinion poll director tells the Guardian the couple does it right if they keep the baby out of the spotlight saying...

"The baby will not play at all in Sarkozy's favour... The French have a very distinct view about the personal and the political and they don't like the two to be confused. Sarkozy did this at the beginning of his mandate and it didn't go down well."

The baby girl is the first child to be born to a French president in office. She is both parents’ first daughter: Sarkozy has three sons from previous marriages and Bruni has a 10-year-old son from a former relationship.
