A shocking Fourth of July tweet from Fox News went viral--

“Breaking News: President Barack Obama assassinated”

Of course- President Obama was safe and sound at Camp David for the weekend-

And Fox News-- wasn’t typing those tweets.

“Someone has hacked it. The site is putting out all kinds of insane, inappropriate and untrue tweets about President Obama. Basically April Fools type stuff that isn’t funny. A producer of mine called Fox a little while ago and they said they didn’t even know about it.” (CNN)

The hackers racked up a total of six tall-taled- tweets- the last one wishing Vice President Joe Biden good luck as the new Commander in Chief. The Washington Post reports...

“Within hours, news of the fake assassination spurred a wave of re-tweets, jokes and comments mocking Fox online... [and] apparently a measure of glee at the embarrassment of a news organization sometimes perceived as opposing Obama.”

So who’s behind the breach? NPR reports-

“...the THiNK blog at Stony Brook University ... says it has exchanged e-mails with a representative of the group thought to be responsible for the hacking — The Script Kiddies. That person tells THiNK that ‘Fox News was selected because we figured their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting.’"

But as CNN reports-- Fox News isn’t laughing.

“Fox saw this as serious. So serious it reported it to the Secret Service. The Secret Service confirmed to us that it is investigating the situation and quote taking appropriate followup action. Fox also says it requested a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this happened.”

In a statement, Fox News reports it...

“...regrets any distress the false tweets may have created.”

So far- no word on what- if any-  consequences are in store for the hacker.
