Homie don’t play that, but Fox plans to-
The network will re-launch ‘90s sketch comedy series ‘In Living Color’ starting in spring 2012, with two new half hour specials. (Fox)
The original ‘In Living Color’ went off the air in 1994, making one Wall Street Journal blogger question whether the show’s still relevant.
“‘In Living Color’ offered a clear alternative to ‘Saturday Night Live,’ by giving audiences new characters (like Homey the Clown) and a fresh comedic perspective. If the new show is overly nostalgic, it could undercut what made the original so popular to begin with.”
A writer for The Root agrees, arguing a lot has changed since the original run.
“But in today's politically correct society, it will be interesting to see if the program uses a new motif. We doubt it, but if Wayans clashed with television executives in the 1990s over inappropriate jokes, wait until he meets today's rights groups.”
But talk show host Wendy Williams suggests a reboot might be just what Fox has been looking for-- after countless failed sketch shows.
WENDY WILLIAMS: “I guess. I liked- there was a little guy who did a show like that on Sunday nights recently. Um, what was his name? Affion Corpet? Crockett. I thought that show was good for all three episodes that were played and then all of a sudden it went away. I thought that was like In Living Color, but I guess they canceled him to say, hey, let’s bring back the real deal. Keenan Ivory Wayans is gonna return as the host and executive producer”
And Fresh Like Dougie says two snaps for Fox- as long as it reunites the original cast.
“How amazing would it be to have Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Lopez, David Alan Grier, Laurieann Gibson, Jim Carrey, and more all on one set?”
If the specials do well, Fox has the option to pick up In Living Color to series.
