Ben LawsonAn all clear has been issued for Fort Lee Army post in Virginia, after a soldier attempted to take her own life on its grounds Monday morning.
The base tweeted the post was on lockdown following an active shooter incident.
The lockdown was lifted less than an hour later. Fort Lee's Facebook page said a female soldier entered its Combined Arms Support Command Headquarters and turned a weapon on herself, firing one shot.
WWBT reports the woman was a 17-year Army veteran and is now being treated at the VCU Medical Center. Her condition is still unknown. No one else was hurt.
An Army statement to the media said the soldier had barricaded herself inside an office, saying she was "enraged" and throwing things around before shooting herself.
A WTVR reporter notes even after the "all clear" was given, local law enforcement could be seen blocking the entrances to the post as several unmarked SUVS arrived at the area.
This comes as post officials planned to roll out Fort Lee Alert, a mass warning and emergency notification system intended for situations just like this one.
Fort Lee is roughly 25 miles north of Richmond, Viriginia. The facility's website boasts it is the third largest Army training site in the U.S.
The post has seen massive growth in recent years due to the realignment of military organizations across the nation. It has a daily population of about 34,000.
The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command will investigate the incident.
