It was a fight between Brian McGuinn and nine tons of garbage. The Florida man fought his way through a landfill to find the $10,000 engagement ring he had accidentally thrown away.

How do you throw away something that valuable? WSVN explains, it was just a simple mistake.

“Anna was in the shower. She handed the ring to her husband, who had other garbage in his hand and dumped it all in the kitchen trash. Then he threw the bag out.”

It took until the next morning for the couple to figure out what had happened. By then, the waste management company had already hauled their trash to the landfill. So McGuinn got down and dirty.

The Miami Herald reports -- he was fighting long odds.

“...the dump crew warned him to not get his hopes up. In all the years people had come to the dump looking for their valuables, only one woman had found what she was looking for -- and that was after searching three days for eight hours each day.

But the ring, a custom piece built from Anna’s own design, was worth it. A landfill worker levelled out the garbage pile for an easier search, and McGuinn dug in. And after enduring broken glass, dirty diapers and rotten eggs, he found it -- after only an hour and a half.

He tells NBC:
“Once I found it I actually gave out a giant manly scream of ‘Yes! I did it! I am victorious!’”

The ring is back on his wife’s finger after a thorough cleaning. The couple are expecting a baby boy.
