Flipboard has released an iPhone version of its mega-popular social news app-- and people are snapping it up. A week after launch, Flipboard is reporting it’s got a million new users.
Flipboard has won praise from Apple and TIME for its news experience. It aggregates social, shared content into a highly visual and highly interactive interface-- perfect for the iPad. But analysts weren’t sure the model would work on the iPhone’s smaller screen.
Gizmodo says-- it does-- because accessing an iPhone is quick and easy.
“It’s Flipboard on the go. The iPad is too bulky to whip out on the bus on the way to work. I’m sure some people do it. But come on, you have your iPhone everywhere you go.”
GigaOm says other app developers might do well to note Flipboard’s success.
“Obviously, this is great news for Flipboard’s reach, but it has implications for the larger iPad app market, too. Specifically, branching out may be a good idea even for apps which traditionally depend on the larger screen of the iPad to deliver their content.”
How good of an idea? TechCrunch says-- the move blew up Flipboard’s traffic.
“Before last week’s release, Flipboard had registered 650 million flips per month on the iPad. Now it’s trending towards 2 billion flips per month.”
But it wouldn’t be an app launch without a speed bump or two. ReadWriteWeb reports:
“Demand for the Flipboard iPhone app was so high that it crashed servers the morning after it launched ...These early launch hiccups apparently weren’t enough to dissuade new users from trying out the uber-hyped app.”
The servers are once again stable, and the app is available for download through iTunes. While you’re there-- pick up the free Newsy app for your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
