She’s been winning her uphill battle against an injury that could have killed her.
But can she win her congressional race?
We’re getting a whiff of a first challenger for Rep. Gabby Giffords’ House seat. KOLD reports...
“A developing story, Republican state senator Frank Antenori is considering a run for Congress, and that could include Gabrielle Giffords’ House seat. A release from Antenori says a formal announcement will come Monday at the Tuscon Republican Women’s luncheon.”
Running against one of the most sympathetic figures in Congress is certainly not an easy decision for Antenori. Politico writes...
“Antenori said he’s ‘getting mixed signals’ about whether Giffords, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head in January, is going to run for another term representing the state’s 8th congressional district but ‘can’t wait to figure out what her decision is going to be’ before laying the groundwork for a campaign.”
Before this becomes a battle of Giffords versus Antenoria, a couple key decisions need to be made. A KSAZ reporter points out the more obvious--
“Congresswoman Giffords has yet to say if she will run for relection.”
And Antenori himself tells KSAZ about another....redistricting.
“Congresswoman Giffords lives about 30 miles from me, even though we are in the same district now, we could conceivably be in two different districts.”
And if Giffords decides to run, Antenori probably won’t.
The Arizona Daily Star quotes him saying...
‘"Let's be blunt. The sympathy factor for the tragedy she suffered and the strength she's demonstrated has been imprinted on the electorate...You'd have to be an idiot to think otherwise.’”
The Huffington Post reports candidates have until May 15 to apply to enter the race.
