The NYPD is investigating a firebomb attack as a possible hate crime.
Four buildings were hit across the borough of Queens Sunday night, including an Islamic center with as many as 80 people inside. WCBS describes that scene:
“Someone called to report a Molotov cocktail had been thrown at the Imam Al-Kohei Islamic Center located along the Van Wyck Expressway in Jamaica. Fire crews did find a blaze and quickly put it out. No one was hurt, but two homes nearby were also hit.”
The New York Times says the firebombs were made with Starbucks bottles in three of the four attacks. They’re attributing that to police, also calling the firebombs “homemade.”
Members of the attacked mosque spoke out in this video from NY1:
ALEX JUMA, MEMBER OF ATTACKED MOSQUE: “We are a very peaceful community here. And someone like this to do it? Come on. I mean, as a parent, I’m asking the mayor, the police department to work very hard to catch who did this for us.”
