An out of control fire in the north of Israel has people questioning if the country is prepared to deal with an emergency. The fire, which began on Thursday, has killed 41 people and caused 17,000 more to be evacuated from their homes. Many are criticizing the government and the fire crews.
Israeli news Web site Ynet quotes an embarrassed Israeli official.
“The PR damage in the world is huge; Israel is perceived as fully incompetent.”
Some news outlets ask--if Israel can’t handle a forest fire, how will it handle a terrorist attack?
HAARETZ.COM: “It turned out that Israel is not prepared for war or a mass terrorist strike that would cause many casualities…under such circumstances, it is best for Israel not to embark on war against Iran.”
The government has called for international assistance in tackling the flames. So far, firefighting aircraft from Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and the UK have arrived. For now, the government is focused on controlling the fire, but questions are being raised as to how the fire began.
BBC NEWS: “People here are already starting to ask how the fire started. As is often the case, arson is suspected.”
However it started, there are fears the fire won’t be stopping any time soon.
FOX NEWS: “I want to show you what’s fueling this fire. Check out just how dry all this stuff is here. We haven’t had rain here for 8 months. As the afternoon wind continues it’s only going to get worse.”
