Down goes Federer. Down goes Federer. The six-time Wimbledon champ lost in the quarter-finals for the second year in a row. Jo-Willfried Tsonga came back to stun the crowd at center court.
“It was a rather passive Roger Federer, especially in the 5th set, as Jo-Willfried Tsonga just absolutely beat him off the court. So Roger Federer is out in 5 sets. And Federer was 178-0 with a 2 sets to love lead. Not anymore.”
The grass court guru, Federer has now lost three of the last four Wimbledons. So is the champ’s time on top coming to an end? A writer for SI says this match is more about credit than blame.
“The questions coming out of today’s match will inevitably surround his chances of winning another Grand Slam... But really, the takeaway from today is that Tsonga just played three great sets. I would not use this match for the jumping off point for the Federer obituary.”
On the BBC, Federer himself agreed, saying, there’s always only one winner. And this time, it wasn’t him.
“I thought my game was plenty good enough to win the tournament. Unfortunately there’s only one winner, and the rest go home with.. empty handed.”
Besides, turning the talk to Federer’s failings, rather than Tsonga’s dominance is to some a disservice. In the Wall Street Journal blog, Tom Perotta says, Tsonga’s game was something to behold.
“For years now, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been the most dangerous man in tennis. Powerful serve. Forehand to die for. Solid two-handed backhand. Touch at the net. Lots of speed. Great reflexes. And energy, energy, energy galore.”
When asked if he could win Wimbledon, Tsonga reportedly responded... “Um...why not?”
