Worried about drinking a little too much eggnog at your company holiday party this year? It may not be a concern by January. The FDA approved a hangover pill called “Blowfish” and it’s supposed to cure all hangover symptoms. NBC’s The Today Show has more.
MATT LAUER: “Scientists have apparently developed a pill that will alleviate the symptoms of a hangover when you wake up in the morning. The headache, the queasy stomach. You wake up sideways, it puts you right.”
But some of the Today Show contributers don’t know if the pill is going to be the cure.
DONNY DEUTSCH: “We are overpilled as a society. One of the things that I know keeps me from drinking is I don't want to feel crappy the next way. In a weird way, does this start to elevate drinking?”
The pill promises that after dissolved in water, the fizzy drink cures a hangover within 15-30 minutes. WCBS interviewed some bar-goers who were nervous about the pill’s ramifications in the Big Apple.
“I’m actually concerned that this is going to bring a whole new breed of binge drinkers to New York and people are going to think that it’s OK to go out and binge drink because there will be no ramifications in the future.”
The tablets are a combination of aspirin, caffeine and a stomach-soothing agent. It’s made to be split up into two tablets and taken the morning after a night of heavy drinking. But the creator of the pill told the New York Daily News this isn’t an excuse to go buckwild on the booze.
“I definitely don’t encourage people to get obliterated … This is a really effective product for people who have a couple too many: A happy hour that goes a little long, or holiday parties are a perfect example ... and they wake up feeling terrible. This gets you functioning again quickly.”
So much for “hair of the dog,” scrambled eggs or chugging coffee to cure your hangover quickly. A blogger for the Stir says she’s skeptical about the pill, but willing to try it out.
“We're going to take down more alcohol this month than we might be willing to admit, which means we're going to be battling some major hangovers. But this may be the last holiday season we'll have to worry about the splitting headaches and nausea... Or ... it could just be an expensive way to get some aspirin into our system.”
A single dose of the pill is just $2.99. It’s supposed to hit stores in January. A writer for BlackBook requests for one more thing.
“Now if they could just make a pill to erase the mistakes you made the night before.”
