Rupert Murdoch's troubles have spread to U.S..

The FBI has launched a probe of News Corp to see whether the Murdoch media empire tried to hack the phones of 9/11 victims.

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now looking into allegations that reporters with the now-defunct News of the World attempted to hack phones of people who were killed during the terror attacks." (NY 1)

Peter King tells the BBC, why he asked the FBI to conduct the investigation.

Peter King -- "Anyone who has hacked into the phones of those who were killed, who were missing and family members during that tragic time, any time but especially during that tragic time, to me is contemptible. And that’s why I have asked the FBI to do the investigation and report on it.”

The probe will be led by the FBI's New York field office along with prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan. ABC News reports, investigators came under pressure from other members of the media -- and family members as well.   One investigator saying...

"You got members of Congress and now the 9-11 family members wanting to know if this happened...What are you going to do? Say no?"

The Washington Post reports -- Democratic Frank Lautenberg urged federal agencies to examine whether any U.S. phone accounts were hacked.

“Journalists at News of the World allegedly bribed British police officers to gain information, a potential violation of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. ‘Further investigation may reveal that current reports only scratch the surface of the problem at News Corp.”

The Los Angeles Times says veteran Washington insiders doubt the company's headaches in Britain could hurt its standing with regulators here.  Attorney John Hane telling the Times, sarcastically...

"If News Corp. or one of the Murdochs or other senior officers or directors got a criminal conviction, maybe, on a really good day, with wind at your back, calm seas, and a nuclear turbine you might get something going … but I really doubt it."
