Fans of little lost brown cows rejoice. The writers of Toy Story have decided to bring Zynga’s hit social game, Farmville, to the big screen. In an interview on their upcoming game ‘Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure,' one of the writers revealed to IGN...
“We're in conversations with Zynga to do something with one of their brands. Can't really say too much on that front yet, but 'Old MacDonald' didn't have a factory, if you get our drift."
The project has yet to be formally announced and Zynga refused to comment, but there is already speculation on how ‘action-packed’ the film could be. Here’s KSTP’s social media minute.
“And now there are some hot rumours out this morning that we could see a Farmville movie from the makers of Toy Story. It was Facebook’s most popular game, of course, although it’s not anymore. If you’re not familiar, it’s a game where you tend crops. So really would it be interesting? Mashable.com reporting it would likely be a 3D animated movie, so we’ll see what happens with that.”
Farmville was ranked the top Facebook game in 2009, and two years later still gets played by more than 35 million users. It currently ranks third behind CityVille and The Sims Social.
But a writer for Mashable wants to know if the audiences could really be interested in a non-interactive version.
“...FarmVille is a game in which you tend crops. Is that going to be a bit … boring? And while to tens of millions of people, FarmVille is an addictive pastime, for the friends of those people (ie. us!) it’s actually kind of a nuisance..."
Bearing in mind that the game isn’t as popular as it once was, Cinema Blend is hoping there will be a drought of interest for the film for the sake of future flicks.
“Considering how weak it is to make a video game adaptation about a farmer minding his crops, hopefully the game will become unpopular enough that the film project will go in the trash.”
But Webtrends suggests the Farmville movie is just another example of how mainstream and new media are merging. Remember a little film called The Social Network?
“The web is mainstream media nowadays. It's only a matter of time before we start seeing more stories influenced by Internet culture hitting the big screen. What about a Steve Jobs movie? Or Bill Gates? A YouTube movie? A Twitter movie?”
And gaming website Touch Arcade also thinks the film wouldn’t exactly be something we haven’t seen before.
“If this seems really stupid to you, we regretfully remind you that movies based on incredibly shallow games like, say, Resident Evil and BloodRayne, have been made and actually shown in theaters.”
In the meantime, fans will have to make do with their imaginary crops and wait to see if Farmville’s film plans ‘grow their way’.
