Gotcha. Once more rumours about Facebook charging its users had people panicked.

As MSNBC’s Chris Jansing reports -- the non-news spread like wildfire. Here’s part of the post.

“If you copy this on your wall, your icon will turn blue and Facebook will be free for you. Please pass this message on. If not, your account will be deleted if you do not pay.”

And The IBTimes has more from the emphatic posts --

“FACEBOOK JUST RELEASED THEIR PRICE GRID FOR MEMBERSHIP. $9.99 PER MONTH FOR GOLD MEMBER SERVICES, $6.99 PER MONTH FOR SILVER MEMBER SERVICES, $3.99 PER MONTH FOR BRONZE MEMBER SERVICES... IT IS OFFICIAL IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES”

The ‘new profile changes’ the post refers to is the roll-out of the Timeline profiles and the recent overhaul of the homepage. If you’re out of the loop Mark Zuckerburg explains on the Telegraph TV’s YouTube channel...

“Timeline is the story of your life and it has three pieces. All your stories. All your apps. In a new way to express who you are.”

And that -- started some apprehension. But the company stepped in quickly to quash the rumour.

Writing on its official page -- the company says, “A rumour on the internet caught our attention. We have no plans to charge for Facebook. It's free and always will be... ”

So why all this commotion? A writer for Mashable has an idea.

“ ...things change. Who knows what direction Facebook will take in the coming years? Another social networking service, Ning, switched from freemium to premium.”

It’s not the first time Facebook users have been duped, says ABC News.

“In July when Facebook announced it was partnering with the video chat service Skype, a similar rumor made the rounds.”
