Google’s new social networking feature, Buzz, has only been buzzing around the Internet for a week, but users are already rejecting some of its features. This could be one of several signs that certain social networks are becoming outsiders, while Facebook is looking like the prom king.
We’re looking at perspectives from CNN, PsychCentral.com, Bloomberg and Tech Crunch.
Buzz is facing backlash for its lack of privacy features, and CNN's Stephanie Elam says Google's behind because Facebook has already been through its growing pains.
Stephanie Elam: Facebook itself can’t really act like they’ve never gone through this: They’re no stranger to user backlash and quick changes like the one Google is experiencing over Buzz. Of course none of those changes or those backlashes seem to have affected Facebook’s rapid growth at all.”
And a new Pew Research Center study shows Twitter is behind, too- at least among teenagers. The study found that almost 75 percent of teens use social networking sites such as Facebook, but less than one percent of teens are using Twitter. PsychCentral.com says:
“Clearly, the still-in-place-to-be is on Facebook …Twitter is simply not as rich a universe or platform for sharing as Facebook is.”
And the study’s researchers say teens aren’t tweeting for the same reason GoogleBuzz is suffering: a lack of privacy. But on Bloomberg News, Wired Senior Editor Nick Thompson argues Facebook actually isn’t much better.
Anchor: “So if there’s just PR problems for them maybe users will want to use something more like Facebook where in the past it’s been easier to control who sees you in theory?
Nicholas Thompson: In theory. Facebook has had huge problems on privacy and lost a lot of trust of its users.”
And Tech Crunch's Michael Arrington says Facebook can beat Buzz at its own game- even in your Gmail inbox.
“ … you're probably going a little insane with all the Google Buzz ... Never fear, we've got a solution: David Mulder has created a Google Chrome extension that adds Facebook into the left sidebar of Gmail, right under Google Buzz. ”
So, is Facebook blaring over Google’s buzz and squawking over Twitter’s tweets, or do these mediums still having a fighting chance?
