Facebook has released its list of the top ten social games of 2011 -- much to the shock of gamers, a Zynga title is not topping the list.
By Facebook’s count Playdom’s Gardens of Time took first place, followed by EA’s The Sims Social and Zynga’s first appearance on the list, CityVille, at number three. Rounding out the top five were DoubleDown entertainment’s DoubleDown Casino and Zynga’s Indiana Jones Adventure World.
But not everyone is buying Facebook’s rankings. Citing statistics from AppData.com, an independent application metrics site, TechCrunch points out that by sheer number of users Zynga should have owned the list.
“Zynga’s CityVille was ranked #3 despite peaking at over 100 million monthly active users and 21 million daily active users — far more than Gardens of Time’s peaks of 17 million MAU and 4 million DAU. … It’s almost as if Facebook used its cloudy methodology to keep Zynga from completely dominating the list.”
And the BBC, also citing the AppData list, points out one glaring omission from Facebook’s list...
“Notably it ranked Farmville as the third most played game with 32.1 million monthly active users. Farmville did not appear in Facebook's top 10 list.”
So what gives? In response to TechCrunch’s criticism, Facebook explained the basis of their rankings with this statement:
“This list was compiled by looking at the top games on Facebook with more than 100,000 monthly active users and giving priority to those games with the highest user satisfaction scores. The result is a list of the games that received the most user recommendations in 2011.”
