Sick of your mom peeping at your drunken party pics on Facebook? Worry no more. CNN explains.

“After a ton of consumer complaints Facebook is switching up it’s privacy controls. Users can now choose who sees a photo or a status update right when they post it. Also, no more photo tag surprises when you log on. They have to be user approved. You can also peek at what your profile looks like to other people.”

Writers at The Guardian welcome the changes-- noting-- Facebook has a long standing history of irritating users with its rapid rollouts...

“... including the introduction of the now standard news feed in 2006 which shared users' activity with friends, and the Facebook Beacon feature which displayed users' commercial activity.”

But some believe Facebook may have ulterior motives for changing its privacy policy. A senior technology consultant with Sophos explains to PCWorld-- Facebook is playing copycat with Google Plus.

“‘Even some of the terminology which Facebook is now using is a direct copy of Google+...‘For instance, you no longer share with everyone, you share with 'public.’”

Writers at All Things Digital, however, think the social media mammoth may just be giving the customers what they want.

“...Facebook isn’t borrowing the greater Google+ anatomy, like ‘Circles’ of friends and a mix of asymmetrical and mutual relationships. Instead, Facebook is making a huge number of tweaks to its profile design, many of them aimed at addressing common user complaints.”

Finally, although some Facebookers consider the privacy changes a big step, others would still like to see even more improvements. TechCrunch explains.

“Facebook’s new system isn’t perfect. I’d still love to see them more directly implement the concept of a ‘follower’. That is, someone who is not your ‘friend’ but wants to follow along with the public things you post. This sort of exists when you ignore friend requests (or on fan pages), but it’s still not ideal.”
