An explosion in China has killed seven people and injured 14 others. CCTV reports the investigation is still on-going.Z

“An electric tricycle reportedly blew up on a bridge near Aksu in southern Xinjiang at 10:30 a.m. local time. A Xianjiang government official says the explosion is being treated as a criminal matter and one man is now in police custody.”

An Al Jazeera reporter on the ground in China suggests the explosion might not even have been intentional.

"It could well have been that this small vehicle was carrying some flammable liquid and that it could have been an accident. But what the officials made very clear is that was intentional and that this was not an accident.”

Gonzo Media quotes a government spokeswoman, who says the city is still very safe, despite the recent attack.

“‘Xinjiang's development will not be affected by a small group of bad people. The overall situation in Xinjiang is good.’”

But Channel NewsAsia disagrees and says the Xinjiang region is not a safe place to be.

“The far-western Xinjiang region, where the mainly Muslim Uighur … minority has long seethed against Chinese rule, has experienced several violent bouts of unrest in recent years.”

A government spokesperson says it’s too early to say whether the blast was an act of terrorism, and Chinese authorities have declined to identify the suspect.
