It’s the first Android tablet to run on 4G -- the first to run Netflix.
The Sprint Evo View 4G is being touted for a number of firsts.
The tablet’s specs are impressive.
1.5 gigs of Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.
A gig of RAM.
Front and rear cams.
A 7-inch 1024x600 screen.
Want to see it straight out of the box -- Slashgear has it.
“You’re also able to highlight things, copy things, and even circle things with your pen. Make notes, circle notes, things like that.”
Know a student? Slashgear says -- this Evo View 4G -- is a note taking machine.
“You’re able to use the Notes app in so many different ways that we’re surprised an iteration of this device hasn’t been called the HTC Scribbler. You’ve got to keep an eye on the pen, unless of course you’ve got a custom case, which you almost certainly will, and it’ll be your best friend and NEARLY an indispensable addition to this already super tablet.”
But for all the hype, WIRED is first out of the gate -- with a caveat. Evo View 4G also runs on the older operating system -- 2.3 Gingerbread -- not 3.0 Honeycomb, the version of the Android made specifically for tablets. For tech geeks, this speaks to a big problem for Android. Too many players -- too many fields.
“Fragmentation is also the key reason why Android tablets have been slow getting popular video-streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu onto its devices. It presents a problem for making sure that Digital Rights Management technologies — or applications that make sure you aren’t ripping and recording any of the streaming content you’re watching — function across all devices.”
It’s also a problem, because Android-lovers -- were specifically being told -- Gingerbread was on-board. Like in this article from April, from AndroidOS.
“HTC’s Evo View 4,... has suddenly become more interesting. According to the mention on Sprint’s coming soon page, this Wi-Max supporting HTC tablet will have Android 3.0 on-board. Evo View 4G is a variant of HTC Flyer which was announced at Mobile World Congress, but is coming with Gingerbread on-board.”
Uh.
Not so much.
And AndroidOS notes, EVO View 4G also -- doesn’t -- have Google Talk Video Chat.
Still, infosyncworld says, this is one nice little device. Oh -- and it does run flash.
“And here’s our Internet browsing experience. It’s top notch. It’s the best. It’s loading flash video right now. And we’re on the wireless connection now, and it’s still pretty darn quick, thanks to the video processor.”
