Facebook had a brief outage Friday afternoon. There's still no explanation as to why.

If you tried logging on to your Facebook page Friday, you might have been met with this error message.

"Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!" (Via Columbia Pictures / "Ghostbusters")

Twitter immediately took flight with tweets like this telling you to, in all caps, "GET TO THE BUNKER," and several tweets per minute were being sent out with the hashtag #FacebookDown. (Via Twitter / @MikahGrimes, Twitter)

For the Midwestern part of America, it happened right around lunchtime. This could be why there was so much social media panic. I mean, what else can Americans do on their lunch breaks?

​Facebook itself stayed mum via Twitter. Its last post, written July 25, was about astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

We knew it was getting serious when tech sites and big-name media started picking it up. (Via TechCrunch, Business Insider, The Huffington Post)

As The Huffington Post cautioned: "Whatever is happening, remember that you'll survive. We promise."

We still aren't sure why the website was down, but it has since come back up. 

​The Facebook developers page was down as well, and when it was back up, it reported "increased errors." It mentioned its engineers hopped on the problem right away.

The only viable explanation we can think of is aliens. Mark, are you OK? Were you abducted? (Via Getty Images, Getty Images)

As of midday Friday, we still don't have an explanation as to exactly what happened.
