Europe is no winter wonderland. Freezing temperatures and furious flurries have killed at least 60 Europeans in the the last several days. (The Wall Street Journal)

In terms of casualties, Poland is suffering the worst. More specifically, (on Dec. 3) The Guardian reports,

“About 30 people have frozen to death in Poland over the past three days … Between last night and this morning, 12 people in Poland froze to death.”

The Czech Republic, Lithuania, Germany and France have also reported deaths -- primarily of homeless people, alcoholics and the elderly. But there are other concerns as well. Baltimore CBS affiliate WJZ explains.

REPORTER: “A weather system stuck over northern Europe has fed arctic air across the continent and dumped snow on it for almost a week.”
REPORTER: Roads at a standstill.
MAN 1: “What should’ve took a twenty minute journey took me six hours.”
REPORTER: “Train tracks without trains."
WOMAN: “I’m going home now, I just phoned my boss.”
REPORTER: “Livestock at risk in the fields.”
MAN 2: “Roads are desperately bad at the moment and it’s just going to get worse.”

And those looking to take a holiday in the sun, or simply return home, are finding their rides canceled.

Geneva, Edinburgh, Basel, Frankfurt and London’s Gatwick airport all saw closings.

Al Jazeera takes a look at transportation in the United Kingdom, which is in the midst of its third consecutive white winter -- a previously rare occurrence.

“Barely half of the scheduled Eurostar services between London, Paris and Brussels have been able to operate. And speed restrictions have added approximately 90 minutes to journey times. Across Europe, thousands of drivers and their whole families have been stranded, prevented by the snow from reaching their destinations.”

But talk about wacky weather--The Irish Times reports...

“Much of nearby Romania and Bulgaria were experiencing unseasonably warm weather, however, with the Bulgarian capital Sofia basking in its hottest December day on record, as thermometers touched 21.3 degrees (anchor say this: celcius, or around 70 degrees fahrenheit).”
