Elton John performed for 400 guests at conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh's Florida wedding over the weekend. Now, the openly gay musician is getting some harsh criticism for the show, specifically because Limbaugh has made several anti-gay comments over the years.

John was reportedly paid $1 million for the wedding, which was Limbaugh's fourth. Angered groups include the blog Queerty.com, a gay advocacy site that called John a "traitor."

"Elton would be better respected if he didn't go out of his way to directly play a role in bettering the life of a man who's working vigorously to deny equality to queer Americans."

Anchors on MSNBC say this shows that even activists like John can be bought.

SCARBOROUGH: "It's just like the Pakistanis. They say you can buy them off. Don't fight the Afghan people."
COMMENTATOR: "He bought off Elton John."
CHUCK TODD: "Well, there you go. Everybody has a price."

Vanity Fair
reports that all earnings from John's private performances go to his AIDS foundation. But the writer says the $1 million wasn't enough to merit performing for Limbaugh.

"...Limbaugh famously does not take AIDS that seriously. ... Elton John should have really charged him... $2 million..."

But The Los Angeles Times says the argument is ridiculous.

"Perhaps conservative and liberal streams can indeed cross without creating a rip in the space-time continuum."

What do you think? Did Elton John sell out, or is this controversy just a candle in the wind?
