Hundreds of Egyptian protesters tore down parts of a recently built and graffiti-covered security wall near the Israeli Embassy’s entrance in Cairo on Friday.
According to Bikya Masr…
“Clashes erupted from the Israeli Embassy… when Egyptian protesters tried to break the security cordon and security forces started beating people randomly. … The Military personnel guarding the embassy fired tear gas at people in an attempt to disperse the crowds that had arrived.”
According to Ahram, the 2,000 protesters used everything from hammers and crowbars to their bare hands to tear the wall down while military police watched. The protesters scaled the 15-story building and removed the Israeli flag while the crowd below cheered.
This is the most recent in a string of protests since the fall of Mubarak. Calling for the end of a historic peace treaty with Israel and more rapid reform. CNN reports...
“Since the ouster in February of President Hosni Mubarak, many Egyptians have called for the end of diplomatic relations with the Jewish state. The two nations signed a peace treaty in 1979.
Egyptians have been angry about the killing of police officers by Israeli soldiers last month when Israel went after militants who had attacked civilians near the Israeli-Egyptian border.”
This is the second time in less than a month that Egyptian protesters have managed to remove the flag from the embassy.
