NASA provides perspective from above as the world celebrates earth day…

Earth Day has sparked a debate in the media, and we’re tracking the coverage.

Some question if the celebration still has any meaning, while others insist it does.

The Daily Review in Pennsylvania suggests Earth Day is as important now as it was when first celebrated 39 years ago.

“Earth Day, even though it is regarded by many as an occasion for hippie nostalgia, has had a dramatic impact over the years in creating public pressure for environmental improvements. The results have included much stronger environmental regulation… …It’s not that Earth Day is irrelevant, it’s that it is closer to being every day.” (Daily Review)

Others disagree. St. Louis Today says:

“…Earth Day has become Earth Week — a hybrid of selfless environmental activism and shameless marketing opportunism…But the planet's most serious pollution problems have yet to be meaningfully addressed. Until they are, all the 100 percent organic free-trade cotton shopping bags in the world aren't going to help very much." (St. Louis Today)

To look at the issues and various perspectives, Newsy.com has created a special Environmental Page. There you’ll find stories about everything from how coal can be clean, to hybrid cars, to plastic pollution in the ocean and much more.

We invite you to explore these stories and the links to their sources, please leave your feed back – and let us know if there are any environmental stories you’d like us to cover…
