The drug war in Mexico is nothing new, but Thursday’s attack at the Casino Royale in Monterrey takes the drug war to a new ‘high’ -- or low.  After a failed robbery attempt, police say two dozen drug cartel members set fire on a crowded Monterray casino -- killing 52 people. A CNN report shows the scene of the incident.

“A group of men entered the casino in broad daylight with flammable liquid, possibly gasoline, and set it alight.  About 80 people were there at the time.”

This wasn’t the first time Casino Royale experienced a crime such as this...the place has been attacked twice before. A more recent trend noted in Monterrey includes attacks targeted towards civilians.

“That violence has been expanding out, and was previously just cartel on cartel, or cartel against government forces, but is not increasingly moving into targeting civilians.  So cases like this where casinos are being targeted, or birthday parties, in some cases eve drug rehabilitation centers, Monterrey, a city which had traditionally been quite safe, has been a city that has seen increasing attacks in the recent year.”

With the increase in violence, the Huffington Post reports that the war on drugs has entered a new, deadlier phase.

“As the country took in the shocking details Friday, some said a new, macabre milestone had been reached in a conflict that’s claimed nearly 400,000 people since 2006.”

In a press conference that took place Friday, CNN en Español captures Mexican President Felipe Calderon’s statement that claims the U.S. is not doing it’s fair share in halting the war on drugs.

“El poder economico y de fuego de las organizaciones criminales que operan en Mexico y en America Latina tiene que ver con esta interminable demanda de drogas de los Estados Unidos.”
[“The economic power and fire of the criminal organizations that operate in Mexico and Latin America deal with this interminable demand of drugs from the Unites States.”]
